A Rebuttal to Faoud Masri's Is the Injeel Corrupted? Now Available

In Is the Injeel Corrupted? (Crescent Project, 2006; Book Villages, 2012), Fouad Masri searches for the truth about the New Testament by tackling the question of whether the present-day Injeel (the Gospel) can be trusted, and whether Muslims should read and follow its teachings.

Masri further examines the claim that the Bible is both corrupted and unreliable as a source of theological truth about Allah, His will, and the Prophets.

Relying on quotes from the Qur’an, the Bible, and history, Masri concludes that the Bible is true, reliable, and free from corruption. The error thus lies not in the Christian scriptures themselves, but in the Muslim view that the Bible is corrupted.

Masri’s argumentation is flawed, however, in that it is based on superficial reasoning that only scratches the surface of Islamic theology on the question of the authenticity of the Christian scriptures. He reaches his conclusions by distorting the meaning of Islamic scripture and calling on readers’ emotions to draw them towards a Christian worldview, with arguments that do not hold up to the scrutiny of tight logic. While the book successfully draws readers to sympathize with Christian thought and theology, it ultimately fails to address Muslim concerns from an intellectual perspective.

New Book! Hope and a Future: The Story of Syrian Refugees

We are proud to announce the release of our new book, Hope and a Future: The Story of Syrian Refugees.

When the Syrian uprising began in March 2011, no one envisioned mass atrocities on the scale we are witnessing today. No one foresaw the displacement of millions that would dramatically reshape regional demographics. No one imagined that children would become the victims of chemical weapons, or that the Mediterranean Sea would become their graveyard.

Today, more than half of the Syrian population has been displaced, a phenomenon almost without precedent in human history. Images of starving civilians trapped in besieged cities have outraged the human conscience. Thousands of children have been slain by barrel bombs, landmines and chlorine gas. More than a quarter million Syrians have perished. These numbers are a shameful indictment on humanity.

Yet, there is hope.

Each day, in refugee camps across the Middle East, aid workers, seeking neither recognition nor reward, sacrifice their comfort to bring Syrian refugees relief. Entrepreneurs, setting aside the pursuit of profits, lend pro bono assistance to innovatively address refugee needs. Volunteers risk their lives to give Syrian refugees hope and a future.

This book tracks the author’s travels to Syrian refugee camps and informal tented settlements in Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq. Relying on his legal background, he offers an unfiltered account of the plight of Syrian refugees from a legal, political and humanitarian perspective.

Yet this book is more than just an account of the lives of Syrian refugees; it answers that burning question on so many people’s minds: How can I help? In discussing corporate partnerships with aid organizations, civil society initiatives, humanitarian missions, volunteering and fundraising, the author shows that there is a role anyone can play in making a lasting, positive impact on Syrian refugees and restoring dignity to their lives.

You can read the first chapter of the book here

New Book! Palestinian Refugees and International Law--Read an Excerpt Here!

We are proud to release Palestinian Refugees and International Law: The International Legal Framework Governing Assistance, Protection and Durable Solutions.

The Palestinian refugee situation raises many questions: What is the historical framework of the Palestinian refugee crisis and what durable solutions are available? Which human rights instruments are applicable to Palestinian refugees? What is the place of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees within the global refugee framework and what challenges does the Agency face?

This book approaches the question of Palestinian refugees from a legal, historical and political perspective to address these and other relevant questions. Seeking to impart an understanding of the place of Palestinian refugees under international law, it explores the rights of Palestinian refugees, including the collective rights of self-determination and state sovereignty and the individual right of return. It discusses the specialized, separate regime established for Palestinian refugees and the relationship of this regime vis-à-vis the UN Refugee Agency and the Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees.

Excerpts from Chapter 4 of Palestinian Refugees and International Law

Herein we provide our readers excerpts from our latest publication Palestinian Refugees and International Law dealing with the human rights instruments applicable to refugees.

Like all other human beings, refugees enjoy the basic human rights described in various international legal instruments, including regional and international treaties and declarations. Refugees are thus the subject of not only treaties that deal directly with refugee questions, such as the Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees (“CRSR”) and Refugee Protocol, but also of international law dealing with human rights protections. The most important of these texts are summarized below.
In cases where refugees’ rights are not protected in national legislation, such rights are often guaranteed under international law, which could take the form of international treaties that host countries may have ratified, persuasive sources of international law, customary international law or any combination of the three.

One may draw on the example of refugees’ rights to adequate housing free from discrimination. Persuasive sources of international law that guarantee this right include the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (“UDHR), which sets forth a right to “a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of [each individual] and his family” (Art. 25.1 UDHR). International treaties, including the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (“ICESCR”), require States party to guarantee the “right of everyone to an adequate standard of living … including adequate … housing” (Art. 11.1 ICESCR). The right to “adequate housing” was also reiterated by the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights with respect to the 1991 Sixth session of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (“ICCPR”) (UN Doc. E/1992/23).

Moreover, the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (“ICERD”) requires States party to “prohibit and eliminate racial discrimination in all its forms and to guarantee the right of everyone, without distinction as to race, colour, or national or ethnic origin, to equality before the law, notably in the enjoyment of the … right to housing” (Art. 5 ICERD).
